Soldier AU
Another week, another letter. It had become the only thing Tom could look forward to while he was deployed. No, it wasn’t someone he knew before his deployment, but a friend of a friend who wanted someone to write to. Her name’s Cordelia, and she’s a pediatrics nurse. He’d write about how hard it was to practice medicine in a non-sterile environment, and she’d write about how many kiddos she got to make smile. The way she wrote with such love, God, was it possible to fall in love with someone through letters?
Weeks turn into Months, and Months into a year, and Tom & Cordelia continue writing each other, week after week like clockwork. That is, until Tom let her know that he was coming home.
Home? As in Home? Here? Where I am? —
Yes ma’am. I’ll be home in a week. Will I see you there? I hope so. Yours truly, Tom.When Tom walked onto the runway and released, he saw a blonde woman souring the crowd, holding a sign that said: SSGT. THOMAS AVERY. Tom began closing the distance between himself and the woman, praying there wasn’t another Staff Sergeant Thomas Avery coming home as he was. “Um, excuse me ma’am. Are you Cordelia?”
“Tom?”
Cooking Class
“Are you sure about this? What if I burn the place down?” Tom pulled the apron over his head, adjusting it before his hands moved to tie it behind his back.
“You’ll be fine, you’re greatly underestimating your ability to cook, well, anything at this point,” Lila started, easily pulling her own apron on and tying it with ease. “It’s just lasagna, garlic bread, and chocolate chip cookies from scratch. Stop worrying so much.”
“Lila, all I do is worry, especially when it comes to safety. Me possibly catching something on fire? Not safe.” Tom shot a look at his friend, knowing that she was the cook, and he made bomb-ass drinks. “You’re just torturing me, aren’t you?”
“Oh, always, Tommy boy. It’s my greatest pleasure, watching you squirm.” Her voice was saturated in sarcasm, and she rolled her eyes at Tom’s look. “This is good for you. You can’t survive on frozen and pre-made meals your entire life.”(( to be continued…))
Wrangling a Child
9 months. Their daughter was 9 months old and crawling on everything, and that included Tom when he attempted a home workout.
Tom was just nearing the end of his workout, and Lila walked out with their babe on her hip as he started his last round of push-ups and stretches. Setting
Anneliese
on the floor near her toys, Lila moved to the kitchen to start dinner. Tom was focused on his counting as he moved up and down, counting each push-up as he tuned out the other sounds of cooking from Lila and cooing and babbling from
Anneliese
. As he neared the end, he felt a pair of tiny hands on his side, pulling herself up to her feet. Tom paused for a moment as
Anneliese
climbed onto his back, resuming slowly as she settled in the small of his back. With each up & down, a giggle bubbled from the little one, causing Lila to look over, a laugh escaping her lips at the sight of Tom with their daughter on his back. With last few push-ups, the baby was in a full-on giggle fit, causing Tom to lose track and just call it a day with his workout.
“Hey, any chance you could grab Anne? I gotta get up and stretch.”
“Sorry babe, my hands are covered in stuff. Looks like you’re stuck.”(( to be continued…))
Beach Outing
It was a rare day when both Tom & Lila had the day off, mostly because they’d planned it about a month prior. It was a sunny day, and they were smack in the middle of summer. This called for a Beach day.
As they arrived at the Beach, Tom hoisted the umbrella over his shoulders as Lila chased
Anneliese
down to the water with their over-sized tote bag slung over her own shoulder. A smile spread to his face as he watched his daughter scare away a flock of seagulls, and the joyous laughter that emitted from her could be heard from several, several feet away. After he’d set up the umbrella and blanket, he joined the pair at the edge of the water, letting the chilly water wash over his feet.
“It’s cold,” Anneliese whined, her arms reaching up for Lila.
“It’s not cold, you’re just not used to it, baby girl,” Tom responded, realizing it was her first time at the beach. “Let’s eat our lunch, then we can play, right Momma?” His eyes moved to Lila’s and a smile came to his face as their eyes met.
“Sounds great,” She replied easily, bouncing Anneliese on her hip before turning and putting her down, letting her run over to their things as Tom and Lila walked hand in hand.

Matchy Matchy
Another week, another set of goofy scrubs. Tom had a decent rotation of about 2 week’s worth of scrubs, ranging from DC and Marvel Characters to Cartoons from Nickelodeon, with a few plain colors sprinkled in the mix for good measure. It was Thursday, and that meant Superman. It was so fun, having the patients on the Peds floor try and guess what scrubs he was going to wear the next day, and they’d learned that it was always Superman Thursdays.
Tom walked into work with a little pep in his step as he sported his favorite set, seeing smiles from patients as he passed by with a wave. He didn’t think that smile would be going anywhere, that is, until Lila turned the corner wearing Wonder Woman scrubs. “No. Nope. Lila, Go change now,” Tom pointed a finger in the direction of the staff locker room. “You did this on purpose. You know Thursdays are for Supes!”
As soon as Lila saw Tom, a michevious smile cracked across her face. “What? No! I’m not changing, I didn’t bring a spare and I’m not wearing the pale blues or powder pinks the hospital provides. No siree!” She shook her head, her lips pursed at her friend.
Narrowing his eyes at her, Tom crossed his arms. “Okay, fine. Just, don’t let the patients think we planned it or anything.”
“Oh I would never!” Lila responded, turning on her heel and walking the opposite way. That was exactly what she was going to do.
