Tom cocked his head, a brow raising. “I’ll at least leave you with something to eat,” he explained. He wasn’t the type to leave someone high and dry – even if they just held him at gunpoint. “They needed me for some spell. My blood, I think. I mean, I don’t really know if I’m 100% safe, but there’s no reason to not live life normally, right?” He explained, gesturing with his hands as he spoke. Tom’s gut wrenched when he heard of the girl’s possession & exorcism. He’d read about it in books and seen it in movies and TV, but never thought it was actually real. “Wow, that’s…wow,” he muttered, unable to come up with better words to describe his feelings. “I mean, I’m one of those supernatural creatures, so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone mistakes me for one of my doppelgangers and comes after me at some point. From what I remember they’re not human, so…” Tom’s voice trailed, his eyes finding the woman’s face once more.
Cara let the matter of food drop for now, instead focusing on what he said about the witches needing blood for a spell, and how he attempted to live a normal life in spite of the fact that he might still be in danger. She had to commend him for that. She wasn’t sure she would be able to do the same if their situations were reversed. He then reacted to the fact that Lilah had been possessed, and she tried to further explain, “You have to understand that, when a demon uses a human as a host, they use their own power to keep it intact regardless of any injury done to it. And in the end, if it becomes too damaged, they can simply hop into another one. Once they do that – or if they’re exorcised from said body – whatever power was holding it together is gone. Every bruise, every cut, every broken bone makes itself known all at once. And the longer the demon possesses someone, the more damage is done. Lilah had weeks of it slam into her all at once.” For Cara, it had been over a year’s worth. She met the man’s gaze as he explained that his doppelgängers weren’t human, that it was possible he’d be mistaken for them in the future, and she asked, “If they’re not human, what are they? And I take it, whoever they are, they have their own fair share of enemies.”
“Oh my God,” he gasped, unable to hide the shock on his face. He knew there were demons in the world, but didn’t know how much damage they could inflict. “I guess that makes sense with her injuries, then. Will she remember anything?” Tom asked, genuinely curious. He could imagine how incredibly traumatic that could be, both for the body and the mind. He ran his hands through his hair before his hand lingered at the nape of his neck. “Well, from what I understand, one’s a vampire and another is a witch of some sort? I heard the witchy guy is pretty dangerous, but the only thing I honestly only know for sure is that we share a face,” he explained, his lips pulling into a goofy expression. “I can only assume they have enemies, given their status as immortal supernatural beings. They’ve probably both been on this planet at least four times longer than I have, if not much longer.”
Stefan closed the distance between them, his face just mere inches from hers. “Now really isn’t the time to test the waters, Evelyn,” his words were bitter as they left his mouth. “And who said I want to gain control? Things are easier without humanity getting in the way. The switch has been teetering, but maybe it’d just be easier to turn it completely off,” he threatened, his head cocking to the side. He didn’t want to fight his friend, but he needed more blood. He needed to feed the monster that lived inside.
Evie stood firm, unmoved in the least by how close he was or by his bitter words. “You’re right, you could turn it off. You wouldn’t feel any remorse or guilt for what you’re doing now. …But you wouldn’t feel anything good, either, would you? Not really.” A beat passed before she continued, “And if you’re so close to flipping that switch, why you are hesitating? Why are we standing here having a conversation? Maybe it’s because you’re not as close as you think you are. Or maybe you just want someone to pull you off that ledge.”
Stefan pulled his face away abruptly, storming to the opposite side of the room before slamming his fist into the wall. His other fist joined it, slamming into the bricks, leaving crumbles falling to the ground. “Maybe I do! So what? There’s nobody left to pull me off. Lexi’s gone. She has been for a while,” he said, his voice low. He brought his head to the bricks, his forehead resting against the cool stone. He closed his eyes, the switch teetering in his mind. “I just want all the guilt gone.”
Tom was sitting on the couch, his arm around his wife as one of the various NYE ball drop programs played on the television and Jesse played on the floor with her doll, Jane. They’d decided to spend the evening at home, just family. As the numbers clicked down to zero, Tom turned to give his wife a New Year’s kiss, but Jesse jumped into his lap before he could. Her little hands were on either side of his face, squishing his cheeks inward. “Happy New Year’s, Daddy!” She exclaimed before kissing him on the tip of the nose. Tom’s face lit up, his smile causing his eyes to squint shut. Laughter bubbled from his chest as her gesture, and he did the same. His hands framed her face, squishing her cheeks gently as he kissed her little nose. “Happy New Year, Jesse Girl.”
A grin spread across his face at her response, and he place a kiss on her head when her smile disappeared. “It’s okay, honey. It’s okay,” he cooed, directing his attention at the doctor. The doctor pulled the x-rays up, and the break was clear. He and the doctor spoke briefly before crouching down to talk to Jesse. “What’s your favorite color? Do you like sparkles?” His eyes twinkled blue and a warm, welcoming smile was on his face. “We’re going to give you a pretty cast to fix your arm, and then you can have your friends and family sign it and draw all over it! Doesn’t that sound fun?”
Arms full, Tom could barely see over the mountain of accessories he had for their snowman. He was bundled up, barely getting used to the cold & snow after living in Atlanta for so many years. “Si, you ready for this? The snow is perfect for building snowmen.”
“Ralph,” Cisco sighed. “What in the world do you have planned? I’m totally in.”
“Okay, so,” he grabbed a marker, starting to write out a list on the board, “Frost and me sourced a Disco ball, Karaoke machine. I have a six foot sub coming, bags on bags of chips. Even got Clark Kent himself making something potluck style.”
Who’s the man? Ralph’s the man.”
“This party is gonna be sick,” Cisco grinned. “Wait, you guys got a disco ball and a karaoke machine? Lit.”
