“How could you?” Her voice cracked halfway through the sentence, and she cleared her throat before continuing. “Just because I was hurt? That wasn’t your decision to make,” Allie huffed, continuing her path to the main road. The anger bubbled in her chest. That wound would have gotten her into a shelter until it was properly healed, and this guy just stole that from right under her.

“It may not have been a cross, but it was mine to care for. And honestly? Yeah, I do want to keep yelling at you but that’s not the best thing to do when these crazies are out to get you and people can easily call in a noise complaint and get us thrown in jail. Let’s go.”

“It was when you could barely walk,” Lucan countered. “We need to get to the motel, and the burn was slowing you down. Now it’s not.” And it wasn’t. They were both back to moving toward the main road, barely a limp to his step. His power required him to have a high tolerance for pain. Not to mention the wound was – albeit slowly – already beginning to heal.

“You want to worry about having enough supplies to do that? About getting an infection? And how would you pay for any of that?” There was no judgement in his tone. Before his powers emerged, it had been a very real worry for him, too. Which was why he didn’t understand this woman’s anger. She was being irrational. So he quit talking, walking alongside her in silence until they made it to the motel. It was two levels, so he requested a room on the second floor in the right corner to give him a good vantage point of everything. Then he paid the man behind the counter before leading the woman to it.

Allie remained silent, her lips pursed as they walked. As they made their way toward their destination, she thought about everything he’d mentioned. He was right, but there was no way she’d ever admit that, especially not to a stranger, even if he did save her life. She walked with her arms crossed, the blanket pulled tight over her shoulders.

As they entered the motel room, Allie quickly claimed a bed after flicking on the light. It had been days since she slept on a cot in a shelter, even longer since an actual bed. She sat on the edge, watching the mysterious man in the dim lighting. “You know, I do worry about not having the supplies, about getting an infection, about money. I worry about it all.” Allie’s voice was very matter-of-fact, and her eyes didn’t meet his, but practically bore a hole in the wall. “But that burn? That burn was going to grant me undeniable access to shelters, at least until it was healed. That would have given me a chance to shower on a regular basis, maybe even find a job and get the ball rolling. So yes, it would have been the cause of so much worry. But it also had the chance to open so many doors.”

Tom let his shoulders relax when he heard Jo’s voice, practically dropping his work back before rushing to the kitchen. “You’re here! You’re really here!” His face was plastered with joy, and he ran over and wrapped his arms around her middle, hugging her tightly and spinning them around a few times.. “I thought you weren’t going to be back for another couple weeks?” He asked, pulling back from the hug to look at her face. It had been far too long since he’d last seen her. Talking on the phone and messaging were great, but it was nothing like being together again.

While the blonde had known Tom would be excited to see her, she hadn’t quite expected such a joyous reaction and had just barely had time to set down the whisk as he closed the distance into the kitchen.

Jo couldn’t help the squeak that flowed from her lips as she was scooped up and spun around. “Tom!” she said with a laugh, cheeks pink. “The job I was headed for turned out to be a bust so… I figured I’d drop in,” she said with a grin, cupping his cheek. She flicked her eyes over his face, wanting to commit his smile to memory, before she leaned in to kiss him tenderly. How could she not kiss him after a greeting that exuberant? He was much too adorable, she just couldn’t help herself.

Tom was surprised but delighted at the kiss from Jo. He kissed her back, moving his hand to cup her face. As he pulled out of the kiss, he gave her a little peck before fully pulling away. A soft smile returned to his face as he looked at Jo. “That’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Best surprise ever,” he added, pulling her into another hug. “Are you cooking for me? I smell bacon.”

[ sms –> Klaus ] well, seeing as Katherine only manipulated me to get what she wanted?

[ sms –> Klaus ] she’s been out of my life for years, so no. i’m not close with her.

[ sms –> Klaus ] so of course i’m going to assume you’re talking about Elena.

[ SMS : Ripper ] My point still stands. You’ve lived over a century. Personally, a side piece wouldn’t be enough to make me EVER go to high school

[ SMS : Ripper ] But to each their own

[ sms –> Klaus ]  side piece? c’mon klaus. that’s rude, even for you.

[ sms –> Klaus ] why are you asking about activities in mystic falls, anyway?

[ sms –> Klaus ] Why do you ALWAYS bring Elena into things?

[ SMS : Ripper ] It’s funny that you ASSUMED I was talking about Elena. Weren’t you close to the other doppelgänger as well?

[ sms –> Klaus ] well, seeing as Katherine only manipulated me to get what she wanted?

[ sms –> Klaus ] Maybe because I turned at 17?

[ sms –> Klaus ] College was never the plan, neither was HS.

[ sms –> Klaus ] Goal was to feed to my heart’s content, but apparently that left too much of a body trail.

[ SMS : Ripper ] And of course that sort of life was void of a certain brunette that you seem so fond of…

[ sms –> Klaus ] Why are you bringing Elena into this?

[ sms –> Klaus ] Why do you ALWAYS bring Elena into things?

It was late, and Tom had stayed at work late because of a 12-car pileup toward the end of his shift. He’d pulled into his driveway to see a light on in the house; a light that wasn’t on when he left for work earlier that day. He panicked and texted Jo, and frantically checked his phone when she texted back. A smile spread across his face at her text, and he grabbed his things and made his way inside.

“Jo? Hello?” He called out as he cracked the door open, still on edge from work.

Jo looked up as she heard Tom’s voice. “Hey, in here,” she called out from the kitchen. She had already prepped what she could while waiting for him, and now that he was actually here, she could finish up the meal she had planned for him.

The house already smelled of bacon, and she had started up the stovetop again as soon as he’d texted her. She was wearing a pair of jeans and t-shirt, her hair had been pulled up in a ponytail as she moved about the kitchen as if it were her own.

“I am so sorry for being late Mr. White, traffic was terrible,” Clark apologized, pushing up his glasses before fumbling with his knapsack. “The reports are-” He continued to fumble, eventually pulling out a report encased in a manila folder. “-right here, sir. Just like you asked.”

Perry took the folder, giving him a nod, “Good, and email a copy to the server to keep on file.”

He didn’t like editing on a computer, there was something satisfying about crossing things out in big red pen. Turning back to his office, it was an unspoken request to follow him, “I have a new story for you Kent.”

Dropping the folder on his desk, he picked up his tablet, signing in, before turning it towards him, “Maxwell Lord is cropping back up in the public sector. Rumor has it he’s been working with the government the last 3 years, hush hush. I want more information.”

“Sure thing, boss!” Clark said enthusiastically, maybe too enthusiastic. He knew he had a lot of desk work to do that day, so he mentally added to the top of his to-do list. His brows raised at the mention of a new story to follow. “Hmm?”

Clark pushed up his glasses as his eyes scanned the information on the tablet. “Right. Can do, Sir,” he nodded, looking back up at Perry. “Should this be expedited or..?”

She didn’t lose interest so much as fall asleep. She had her face pressed up against her dad’s chest, tiny little snores escaping her mouth as she kept her grip tight on Jane.

He watched as her eyes grew heavy, and he could tell she was fighting sleep. As Tom continued reading, he felt his daughter grow more and more relaxed until she nuzzled into his chest. When he looked down, she was fast asleep, her chest rising and falling evenly as she held Jane tightly. He closed the book and set it on the side table before pulling the blanket tighter around her and wrapping his arms around her. It had been too long since she fell asleep in his arms, and he was going to savor every moment.
